LETHBRIDGE, AB – A man who took part in the February 2022 Coutts border blockade has been sentenced.

Appearing in Lethbridge Court of King’s Bench on Monday, January 29, 2024, James Edward Sowery, 38, of Killam, was sentenced to 10 months in jail.

He also faces a 10-year firearms prohibition and must submit a DNA sample.

Sowery was charged with one count each of assault with a weapon and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle on February 14, 2022.

Court heard that Sowery attempted to hit an RCMP constable at the protest with his vehicle. The officer was able to get out of the way.

Crown lawyers had originally sought a sentence of one year, while the defence argued for a conditional house arrest.
