Lethbridge wrestlers shine at weekend competitions

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Local wrestling talent was in the spotlight this past weekend.

Wrestlers from the Lethbridge Amateur Wrestling Association (LAWA) participated in two tournaments from February 4 to 5, 2024. Those included the Cobra Classic in Calgary and the Golden Bear Invitational in Edmonton.

The tournaments proved to be very successful for the LAWA wrestlers, as every athlete finished with a medal.

At the Cobra Classic, there were five competitors, with four of them finishing with a gold medal in the novice divisions. The participants were:

  • Grady Steed 54kg (Gold)
  • Kayden Mellafont 64kg (Gold)
  • Torsten Bergen 92kg (Gold)
  • Amelia Prenevost 56kg (Gold)
  • Jack Huggins 72kg (Silver)

The local wrestlers saw similar success at the Golden Bear Invitational, winning three gold medals and two silver:

  • Sydney Shields 78kg (Gold)
  • Payton Shields 62kg (Gold)
  • Kim Maine 64kg (Gold)
  • Kade Linford 56kg (Silver)
  • Solomon Prenevost 72kg (Silver)

“It was fantastic to see our younger athletes compete at the Cobra as well as see our elite athletes excel at the higher competitive levels.” Said LAWA Treasurer and Coach Alan Hansen.

He added, “LAWA’s programs continue to see athletes develop from the grass-roots all the way to the senior divisions which ensures a healthy continuation of our sport in Lethbridge.”
