Fort Macleod town councillor announces resignation

Feb 13, 2024 | 9:16 AM

FORT MACLEOD, AB – A member of town council in Fort Macleod is stepping down.

Marco Van Huigenbois made the announcement at council’s meeting on Monday, February 12, 2024.

“In the near future, I face significant challenges, both personal and legal. These challenges may indirectly cast our community and my role on council in a negative light,” said Van Huigenbois. “In consideration of this and my own personal convictions, I have made the difficult decision to resign as councillor for the Town of Fort Macleod, effective February 13, 2024.”

He said that he has always strived to do what is right for his community, but acknowledges that not everyone will like every decision that council makes.

Van Huigenbois was first elected to council in 2017 and was in the middle of his second term in office.

“It goes without saying that it has been an honour and a pleasure to serve, and a big thank you to fellow council and administration for putting up with me, naturally. And thank you to the community for allowing me the opportunity to represent you for six-and-a-half-years,” Van Huigenbois added.

Mayor Brent Feyter thanked Van Huigenbois for his dedication to council and the community.

Although it was not explained what the significant challenges are that Van Huigenbois is expected to face, Feyter said he understands that the council member is in a tough position and extended his gratitude for putting the municipality first in his decision.

A by-election will need to be held to fill Van Huigenbois’ now-vacant seat on council. Chief Administrative Officer Anthony Burdett said he will recommend a by-election date at council’s February 26 meeting.
