LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge City Council has named a new Municipal Historic Resource in the city.

The three-storey Whitney Block, located at 411 3 Avenue South, has been designated as the 30th Municipal Historic Resource in the city.

The new owner of the building applied for historic designation, and the Historic Places Advisory Committee worked with the owner on a mutually agreeable Statement of Significance. Following that and a 60 day waiting period, the bylaw was brought to council for second and third reading.

Ross Kilgour, Senior Community Planner said, “The Whitney Block’s rich commercial history attests to the continued commercial viability of the building given its key location in the downtown area, its large capacity, and its attractive design.”

He added, “We are pleased that Council has approved this designation and are also thrilled that the owner is working on bringing new life to this important building.”

The building was built in 1907 by David J. Whitney, a rancher and owner of the Ideal Farm. Whitney’s brother Frank operated Whitney Real Estate out of the building.

The building has had various tenants over time, including a hotel, various pubs and restaurants, and an upholstery shop. The Whitney Block was last home to The Owl Acoustic Lounge, before they moved to their new location.

Designation of Municipal Historic Resources allows the City to ensure protect historic places for future generations.
