Lethbridge wrestlers prep for provincials at Calgary event

CALGARY, AB – Wrestlers from Lethbridge hit the mats in Calgary last weekend.

Local athletes took part in the Sir Winston Churchill Wrestling Classic February 9 and 10, 2024.

It was the final preparation before the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA) Rural Qualification for Provincials event, which is being hosted in Stirling this weekend. The top five athletes in each weight class qualify to compete at the ASAA provincials March 8 and 9 in Edmonton.

Below are the local athlete results from the Calgary event:

Junior High Division

  • Reid Ellis-Toddington (36-40 kg class): bronze
  • Colby Seely (52-55 kg class): gold
  • Sydney Shields (79-86 kg class): bronze

ASAA High School Division

  • Grady Steed (53 kg): sixth-place
  • Kayden Mellafont (62 kg): fourth-place
  • Christien Lowry (65 kg): silver
  • Jack Huggins (72 kg): did not place
  • Omni Lowry (72 kg): fifth-place
  • Payton Shields (61 kg): silver
  • Kim Maine (65 kg): bronze

Coach Alan Hansen said, “The Churchill Wrestling Classic is one of the biggest Calgary wrestling tournaments of the year and with its Round Robin format, our wrestlers get the opportunity to get in as many matches as possible. Most of our athletes got five to seven matches.”

The ASAA provincial qualification competition is in Stirling February 23 and 24.
