More Albertans to qualify for legal aid as income threshold changes

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Affordable legal services could be provided to a greater number of Albertans.

The Government of Alberta is increasing the income threshold for legal aid from $24,456 pre-tax to $30,000 before taxes. This means that anyone who makes up to $30,000 per year could become eligible to receive representation through Legal Aid Alberta (LAA).

LAA provides low-cost legal services in family law, family violence matters, child welfare, immigration, as well as youth and adult criminal defence for lower-income Albertans.

Justice Minister Mickey Amery said these services help people in some of the most trying times of their lives, so it is important to ensure they can reach a greater number of people.

“Whether it’s a parent fighting for child support or a survivor of domestic violence fleeing an abusive partner, fairness before the courts shouldn’t depend on the size of a person’s bank account,” said Amery. “Increasing the financial eligibility guidelines will allow more Albertans to qualify for legal aid and get the help they need when they need it.”
