Lethbridge elementary school hosts initiatives for Random Acts of Kindness Week

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge elementary school is making a positive impact in the community.

The Children of St. Martha School (CMS) held two events this week. On Tuesday, February 13, the school held its Take What You Need event, where the students designed “heart art” that was displayed on the fence outside the school for passerbys to see.

Shalyn Amonson, a grade 5/6 teacher at the school said the Take What You Need event is very beneficial, as it gives the students a way to express their creativity, and give kindness to the community.

She explained, “Come and grab a piece of art that our students have worked so hard on, and put a lot of thought, kindness and love into so that they can come and spread some light into your day, especially in the winter when things can be tougher on some people.”

The school then will follow up the Take What You Need Event with the Blankets of Hope initiative on Friday, February 16. The event will see the school distribute 240 purple blankets out to the community, with a personalized note of kindness attached to each one.

The school said they are the only one in Canada to receive these blankets free of charge for distribution. 2024 marks the sixth year CMS has been involved with the program.

Laurie McIntosh, a kindergarten teacher at CMS said, “Lots of times we think we are born with kindness and empathy, but those are skills to be practiced, so we like to give our staff and students lots of opportunities to practice kindness.”

She added, “We like to remind our kids that not everybody feels loved during this time, not everyone feels like they matter, so its our job as a community to come together and remind people that our community wouldn’t be the same without them.”

Both events are part of the Random Acts of Kindness week at Children of St. Martha School.
