LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes and Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES) are teaming up for a fun night of hockey and fundraising.

On Friday, February 23, 2024, the Canes will host the Edmonton Oil Kings at the ENMAX Centre at 7:00 p.m. During the game, a series of exclusive, one-of-a-kind jerseys will be unveiled.

LFES Chief Greg Adair said the jerseys will be auctioned off with the proceeds supporting local charities.

“I have the opportunity to see [the jerseys] and they are amazing, so please come out, come to the game, bring your money – they will be at an auction,” said Adair.

Senior Firefighter Carl Mix explains that, in the past, the money raised through fundraisers like this one goes towards efforts like the Adopt-A-Family program, Toys-For-Tots, providing blankets for seniors, and supporting their members who have been hospitalized.

Dating back to 2007, Mix said they have raised over $400,000.

Lethbridge Hurricanes Game Night Coordinator Tony Deys said it means a lot to him to be able to support the city’s firefighters and paramedics.

He became emotional as he described the cardiac arrest he suffered in 2019 and how, without them, he might not be here today.

“I can attest to the fact of what they do on a daily basis. When you look at the plaques behind me and you see the paramedics and the amount of people it takes to save on life, it really is mind blowing. When you see seven names and you see one life saved, that’s only a microcosm of what it takes, and what these fine men and women do day in and day out,” said Deys.

He continued, “So, for us to be able to help them to raise awareness and to maybe get some good recruits to come out and continue the tradition that the men and women have started here, I think it’s the least that we as an organization, a community-owned organization, can do.”

Before and during the game, Deys added that there will be a lot of fun activities for the entire family to experience. Attendees can get inside a firetruck, the first 1,000 children in the door will receive a free replica fire helmet, play intermission games, and listen to a pipe and drum band.

An online auction will kick off during Friday’s home game for the special jerseys and it will run until 7:00 p.m. on March 1, 2024. The auction will take place on 32auctions.com/Lethfire
