Avoid tossing baby’s breath into green carts: City of Lethbridge

Feb 22, 2024 | 9:57 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Officials with the City of Lethbridge are warning about baby’s breath.

The plant, also known as maiden’s breath, is often used as a filler flower in floral arrangements. The small white flowers are usually found alongside roses in Valentine’s Day bouquets.

The City said even though the plant looks harmless, it is classified as an invasive species and is provincially regulated in the province as a noxious weed. A full list of provincially regulated weeds is at the Alberta government website.

Residents are advised that baby’s breath, along with other noxious weeds, are not accepted as part of the City of Lethbridge’s organics program.

The plant has a long root system that can reach as much as four metres in depth. It is also drought resistant and can access water much deeper than most native plants, which can take away moisture from local flora.

The City said the long roots of baby’s breath make it difficult to remove once it is established. Additionally, one plant can produce thousands of seeds that can survive through the composting process.

Individuals with baby’s breath in their floral arrangements are asked to remove it from the flower bouquet, place it in a sealed garbage bag and dispose of it in their black cart.
