Two charged in Lethbridge in connection with alleged assault of infant

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) has charged two individuals in connection with the alleged assault of a newborn, as part of an investigation dating back to late 2023.

On November 27, 2023, Child and Family Services requested police assistance after receiving a report of an injured three-week-old baby girl at Chinook Regional Hospital.

The LPS said further investigation revealed that the baby’s arm had been broken “as a result of significant force”. The infant is no longer in the care of the two individuals charged, after being taken in by Child and Family Services.

An LPS investigation has been ongoing since then and on March 1, 2024, a 33-year-old woman and 39-year-old man were arrested without incident.

The accused cannot be named in order to protect the identity of the infant victim.

They are both charged with the following:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Failing to provide the necessaries of life
  • Criminal negligence causing bodily harm

Following Judicial Interim Release hearings, the woman was remanded in custody and the man was released. The 33-year-old woman is slated to appear in court on March 5, and the man on March 8.
