LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge man has been charged after police say he reported a false crime.

On March 2, 2024 at around 7 p.m., the Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) responded to a 911 call reporting a hostage-taking and kidnapping in progress.

The male caller reported a friend had just phoned him saying he had been kidnapped and was trapped in the back of a moving vehicle. Dispatchers were told that the kidnappers were armed with knives, bear spray and possibly a firearm.

The LPS Criminal Investigation Section and Critical Incident Team were immediately called out and initiated an investigation, which included assistance from the Calgary Police Service.

Police located the alleged victim in Calgary, and confirmed he was safe, and was not the victim of any crime. The caller was located at a residence and was arrested without incident.

Jacob Xander Brown, 20, of Lethbridge, is charged with one count of public mischief. He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on May 8.
