LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge has launched its Childcare Needs Assessment survey.

The goal is to identify challenges families and childcare providers are facing.

Information gathered will be used to develop recommendations to support expanding capacity in Lethbridge. Officials said this survey is part of a collaborative approach that also includes a childcare provider workshop.

Logan Bartholow, City Project Planning Lead, “We are engaging several stakeholders to address a pressing need in our community.”

“By involving families, childcare providers and other stakeholders, we can develop innovative solutions to enhance both accessibility and quality of local childcare services.”

The City said while childcare legislation and regulation fall under provincial jurisdiction, municipalities can play an important role in reducing barriers and supporting the creation of local childcare programs and spaces.

Bartholow said, “Expanding capacity contributes to economic development and social equity within the community.”

“Ensuring greater access to affordable and high-quality childcare allows more parents to participate in the local workforce, enhancing productivity and nurturing a more inclusive society.”

The Childcare Needs Assessment will contain recommendations for immediate and long-term needs within Lethbridge.

The survey is open until April 2, 2024.

Results from the survey, along with other community engagement initiatives, will help inform the Childcare Needs Assessment that will be presented to City Council in June.
