Lethbridge man charged in RCMP firearms investigation

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge man has been charged following an RCMP firearms investigation.

On Feb. 27, 2024, Strathmore RCMP received a complaint in relation to firearms offences occurring in rural Alberta. Police say there were videos of a male suspect shooting a firearm out of moving vehicles, and shooting near roadways with handguns and long guns.

The RCMP’s Southern Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit (SAD CRU) took over the investigation, and after reviewing the footage, identified the suspect as 20-year-old Nicholas Bastarache from Lethbridge .

The RCMP, with assistance from the Lethbridge Police Service and the Lethbridge Police Tactical Unit, executed a search warrant on a March 8 at a property on the 100 block of 5 Street S in Lethbridge. Police say they uncovered and seized a loaded handgun and shotgun in the search.

Bastarache was arrested and charged with the following offences:

  • Careless Use of a Firearm
  • Unsafe Storage of a Firearm
  • Firearm: knowledge of unauthorized possession
  • Possession of a Weapon Obtained by Crime
  • Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle
  • Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with ammunition without license
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking CDSA (x4)

He will appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Strathmore on May 21.
