LETHBRIDGE, AB – One of the several people looking to lead the Alberta NDP will try to make her case to the people of Lethbridge.

Kathleen Ganley is set to host a town hall meeting in the city on Friday evening, March 15, 2024.

She says it will be a great opportunity to hear from the people of Lethbridge and learn more about their wants and needs.

Ganley also looks to tell those in attendance about her platform and why she feels she is a good choice to lead the party.

One of her main objectives is to be able to talk about the economy as it effects everyday people, rather on a macroeconomic scale.

“We need to focus not just on total economic growth, but on like how it’s playing out in the real lives of people, because right now, the government is sort of doing a victory lap saying everything’s perfect, but that doesn’t accord with most peoples’ lived experiences, so that’s something we want to bring to the forefront.,” says Ganley.

Ganley announced her candidacy in the leadership race in mid-February. She says it has been a wonderful experience so far.

A major concern she has heard from people across the province is what she describes as the “incompetence” of the governing United Conservative Party on matters like healthcare and coal mining.

Since becoming the first to enter the contest a month ago, five others have stepped forward to compete against her.

Ganley says all of the candidates bring “phenomenal qualities” to the race, which she attributes to the work the NDP has done over the last decade to establish itself as a “real force to be reckoned with” on governing.

She admits that no political candidate can run a successful campaign on their own and highlighted the skills of her team members, one of whom is Lethbridge-West MLA Shannon Phillips, who serves as Ganley’s co-chair.

Ganley spoke highly of Phillips and the knowledge and experience she brings.

“Shannon has been an amazing support and she really understands the perspective of mid-sized cities and the people who live there, but also perspectives throughout the province. She’s an incredibly smart politician, she’s a great communicator, and she really listens to people,” says Ganley.

The Alberta NDP looks to choose its new leader on June 22, 2024.

The town hall takes place at the Sandman Signature Lethbridge Lodge from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
