LETHBRIDGE, AB – This year marks the sixth anniversary of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash, and the City of Lethbridge will continue to honour victims, their families and all those impacted.

On April 6, 2018, 16 people were killed and 13 were injured in the collision involving the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team. One of the victims was Lethbridge’s Logan Boulet.

Boulet’s organ donation following his death saved six lives.

This resulted in more than 150,000 people registering to become organ donors, in a phenomenon that’s become known as The Logan Boulet Effect.

Green Shirt Day was later created to honour, remember and recognize all the victims and families of the crash and to continue Boulet’s legacy by encouraging Canadians to sign up as organ donors.

On Tuesday, March 26, 2024, Lethbridge City Council voted unanimously to have the Mayor’s Office again declare April 7 as Green Shirt Day.

“Logan Boulet will always be remembered as a remarkable young man. He saved lives and his inspiring legacy will continue to save lives. I commend his parents, Toby and Bernie, and sister Mariko, for continuing efforts to promote Green Shirt Day,” Mayor Blaine Hyggen says.

“I am pleased that my colleagues on Lethbridge City Council have supported my resolutions, first in 2019 to rename Adams Park Ice Centre to Logan Boulet Arena, then each year since 2021 to declare April 7 as Green Shirt Day.”

Hyggen says he wants to bring this item to council every year, instead of it being just a one-time declaration, to continually highlight Boulet’s impact.
