Lethbridge athletes skate to success at Medicine Hat event

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Local speed skaters made their way to Medicine Hat last weekend for the Western Canadian Youth Short Track Speed Skating Championships.

The meet on March 23 and 24, 2024 featured the top 11 to 13-year-old skaters from the western provinces, Northwest Territories and Yukon.

Events included a 400-metre heat, semi-final and final, along with an 800-metre heat, semi-final and final, a 1,500-metre heat and final, and a 1,000-metre super-final. The weekend also included two relay races.

In the Youth Female 13 category, Lethbridge’s Zosia Adelman won gold in the 1,500-metre event and a bronze in the 400-metre.

Additionally, she finished fifth in the 800-metre and fourth in the 1,000-metre to finish second overall in her age category. Adelman’s relay team finished third in the team relay event.

Meanwhile, Ryker Olsen, competing in the Youth Male 13 category, secured personal bests in the 400, 800 and 1,000-metre distances. In the 400-metre, he finished with a personal best time of 42.9 seconds. His relay team placed third in the B-Final. The weekend marked Olsen’s first national-level event.

In the Youth Female 12 category, Claire Peake won a bronze medal in the 800-metre. She finished fifth in the 1,500 and sixth in the 400-metre, securing a fourth-place finish overall. Peake set a personal best in the 800-metre with a time of 1:26.8 and a best in the 1,000 of 1:52.9. Her relay team finished first in the B-Final.

The local athletes now shift gears and turn their attention to dryland training for the next three months.
