Open Farm Days is returning to Alberta for 2024, and registration is now available.

The event is a celebration of Alberta agriculture that gives people insight into how food gets to their table through interactive experiences on farms and ranches across the province.

In the event, farmers open up their properties to the public to give them a chance to experience what work is done on the farm.

Tim Carson, CEO of Open Farm Days says the program also provides another purpose.

Open Farm Days is coming off a very successful 2023, which saw over 130 farms participating, and the direct farm sales or the two day event totaled nearly $300,000.

In addition to host farms, 10 agricultural societies from Crossfield, Spruce Grove, Heritage, Coaldale, Grande Prairie, Smoky Lake, Stettler, Lac La Biche, Big Country and Rocky Mountain House participated in Open Farm Days.

In past years, farms have included attractions like corn and sunflower mazes, wineries, stables, petting zoos and craft breweries, as well as the crops and livestock on other farms.

Carson adds that for the farms, there are resources to help them thrive, “Those who are signed up as a host farm have access to a great deal of education and support. We have a series of webinars we provide on every topic from insurance to licensing to improving the customer experience.”

2024 marks the “Year of the Alpaca” for Open Farm Days. Alpacas are a newer breed to Alberta farms, but they are more prevalent than some may think, according to Carson.

Carson further explained that Alpacas are essential for the growth of the fibre and hemp industries in Alberta.

Registration for Open Farm Days is available until April 30. Those interested in hosting can register at the Open Farm Days website.
