Lethbridge Lightning capture 2023-24 RHL championship

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was a celebratory weekend for the Lethbridge Lightning.

The senior AA men’s hockey team captured the Ranchland Hockey League (RHL) championship with an 8-0 win against Fort Macleod on March 30, 2024 at Nicholas Sheran Arena in Lethbridge.

The Lightning, who finished in second place during the regular season with a record of 11-5-0-0, swept the Fort Macleod Mustangs in the championship series.

Fort Macleod finished the regular season in first place with a record of 12-3-0-1.

In game one of the finals, Lethbridge defeated the Mustangs 5-4 in overtime. In game two, it was a 5-2 win on home ice for the Lightning, which was followed by a 7-1 victory in Fort Macleod for game three. Lethbridge captured the league crown in game four with their 8-0 victory.

It was a special feeling for the Lightning, as they had lost in the finals every year since league play resumed post COVID-19.

GETTING THERE

Lethbridge was dominant in their first-round best-of-five playoff series against Siksika. They swept the Buffaloes, who finished third in the regular season standings. In the series opener, Lethbridge earned an 8-6 victory. That was followed by a 7-1 win in game two and a 5-4 victory in game three.
