LETHBRIDGE, AB – Even though they’ve been eliminated from the WHL playoffs, the Lethbridge Hurricanes have some celebrating to do.

Two players have been recognized for their efforts on and off the ice.

The league has named defenseman Noah Chadwick as the Central Division Scholastic Player of the Year for the 2023-24 season. The 18-year-old excelled in the classroom during the hockey season, graduating grade 12 a year early and starting his post-secondary studies at Athabasca University and Lethbridge College. Chadwick received the Governor General Award at his high school graduation. The award is presented to the student with the highest grades in their graduating class.

At Lethbridge College, the Toronto Maple Leafs signee earned a 98 per cent average in English 1150 – Academic Writing in the fall. He also secured a 93 per cent average in Introduction to Statistics at Athabasca, as well as a 91 per cent grade in Psychology as a Natural Science.

On the ice, Chadwick collected a career-high 56 points with 12 goals and 44 assists, along with 24 penalty minutes and a plus-13 rating. This season, he became the first Hurricane blueliner to reach the 50-point mark since the 2019-2020 season.

With his Central Division award, Chadwick is a finalist for the WHL’s Daryl K. Doc Seaman Memorial Trophy for the league’s Scholastic Player of the Year. Three past Hurricanes have won the award: Casey McMillan (1986-87), David Trofimenkoff (1992-93) and Bryce Salvador (1995-96).

The other finalists for the Scholastic Player of the Year award are Andrew Thomson of the Kamloops Blazers, Berkly Catton of the Spokane Chiefs and Kolten Bridgeman of the Regina Pats.

HARRISON MENEGHIN

Chadwick’s teammate Harrison Meneghin has been named the Central Division Goaltender of the Year for the 2023-24 season.

The 19-year-old netminder finished the regular season with a 27-20-5-0 record through 53 games. He secured a 2.59 goals against average (GAA), a .919 save percentage and three shutouts. Meneghin became just the 10th Hurricane in team history to reach the 25-win mark during a season.

Over the course of his WHL career, he has appeared in 90 career games, earning a record of 46-32-7-2 with a 2.72 GAA and a .913 save percentage, along with four shutouts.

In 2023, Meneghin attended the Minnesota Wild’s rookie and training camp.

He is now a finalist for the WHL’s Del Wilson Memorial Trophy for the league’s Goaltender of the Year. Jamie McLennan is the only prior Hurricane to have won the award, in 1990-91.

The other finalists for the award are Brett Mirwald of the Vancouver Giants, Jan Spunar of the Portland Winterhawks and Jackson Unger of the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The WHL will announce its league award winners from April 30 to May 9, 2024.
