LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Airport could have some brand new hangars in the coming years.

The City of Lethbridge has received a grant of $150,000 from the Government of Alberta to conduct a Hangar Development Feasibility Study and Business Case.

Hangars are large structures designed to hold aircraft and other sizable items.

Corporate Services Director with the City of Lethbridge Jason Elliott says they are in demand.

“We’ve heard from our area partners in the aviation industry that this is something that’s important to them. We’re optimistic that, with this work, we’ll be able to dig in, really find out what the needs of the region are, and be able to put a plan in place to activate either some capital money in the long run and/or a business plan to develop some commercial space out at the airport,” says Elliott.

He does not think that the development of hangars will directly lead to an increased number of flights at the Lethbridge Airport, but would rather be focused on commercial development and creating new revenue sources.

The exact details of what these hangars might be are still up in the air, but Elliott explains that some of the possibilities include aviation-related airside businesses, fuel services, storage space, warehousing and distribution.

Work on the study is set to get underway immediately and a report is expected to be completed by September 2024. Once that happens, the report and its recommendations will be presented to the city and provincial governments.

This is another component of the City’s efforts to redevelop and enhance the Lethbridge Airport. Over the last several years, more than $25 million has been spent on a variety of renovations and upgrades.
