Hurricanes swept by Broncos in first round of WHL playoffs

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The season has come to an end for the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The ‘Canes fell 5-4 in double overtime against the Swift Current Broncos on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at the ENMAX Centre, losing their first round playoff series four games to none.

FIRST PERIOD

The Hurricanes came out firing at the start of the game, with Trae Wilke scoring 1:27 into the opening period. His goal was assisted by Hayden Pakkala and Logan Wormald.

At the 8:58 mark, it was Carter Dereniwsky scoring his first of the post-season, to put Lethbridge up 2-0. Kash Andresen and Logan McCutcheon assisted on the goal.

Brayden Edwards put Lethbridge up 3-0 at the 15:15 mark, scoring his second of the 2023-24 playoffs off assists by Tristen Doyle and Wormald.

It looked as though the home team would be going into the break up 3-0, but Josh Filmon scored his third playoff goal just before the sound of the buzzer, at 19:20. Filmon’s goal was assisted by Mathew Ward and Connor Hvidston.

SECOND PERIOD

Hayden Pakkala scored 3:27 into the second period, with McCutcheon and goaltender Harrison Meneghin earning the assists.

Swift Current would come roaring back throughout the second frame. At 13:12, Clarke Caswell scored on a power play off assists from Ward and Conor Geekie.

Just over a minute later, at 14:57, Luke Mistelbacher scored his fourth of the series with assists from Ward and Owen Pickering.

Going into the final period of regulation, Lethbridge led 4-3.

THIRD PERIOD

In the third period, Grayson Burzynski scored off assists from Rylan Gould and Peyton Kettles to tie the game at 11:23.

The Hurricanes were unable to respond, which meant the match-up went to overtime.

OVERTIME

The first overtime period yielded no goals, so the contest was sent to a second extra period.

Off an assist from Clarke Caswell, Conor Geekie sealed the win for Swift Current 37 seconds into the frame, closing out the game at 5-4 for the Broncos.

The three stars of the game were Lethbridge’s overage players: captain Joe Arntsen, Sean Tschigerl and Dylan Sydor.
