‘Cinderella Project’ providing free grad dresses & suits in Lethbridge

Apr 11, 2024 | 2:27 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – MyCityCare is once again working to ensure every high school grad can arrive in style.

The non-profit has launched its eighth annual Cinderella Project.

Program Coordinator Tanya Lister says she and their team of volunteers work to select the perfect dress or suit for those about to finish Grade 12.

“We mirror a boutique experience, so it’s a private appointment, they come in, they get to try on things and find out what they like best and choose the outfit they want to wear for grad,” says Lister.

In this year’s shop, more than 500 dresses and 200-300 suits are available at no cost in a variety of colours, sizes, and styles. Participants can also select pant suits, shoes, accessories, makeup, and more.

Every item on display has been donated.

There is even a handful of hair salons and photographers who have volunteered to provide free mini sessions.

“Attending grad is super expensive, in particular, the formal wear,” says Lister. “We want all students in our city to be able to cross the stage and have that whole grad experience. They worked so hard to get here, often overcoming lots of different barriers in their lives and we want to be able to celebrate with them.”

Last year, 57 students in Lethbridge took part in the Cinderella Project and she anticipates it may be higher in 2024.

Anyone looking to register for a grad outfit can do so on MyCityCare.ca.

Clothing donations can be dropped off at the non-profit’s office at 120F Mayor Magrath Drive North between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays.

Lister explains that they are looking for sponsors who can help out with the costs of operating their space and providing alterations. Prospective sponsors can send an email to tanya@mycitycare.ca.
