New sport volunteer tool launches in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A new volunteer recruitment tool has been announced by the Lethbridge Sport Council (LSC).

Officials say the website addresses some of the issues sport and recreation organizations in Lethbridge are facing following the COVID-19 pandemic. The LSC says groups have been challenged to fill roles like board members, officials, coaches and event support personnel.

The council is benefitting from funding through the federal government’s Community Services Recovery Fund. The one-time investment of $400 million is aimed at boosting the capacity of community service organizations dealing with the long-term effects of the pandemic.

The LSC website is designed to streamline the volunteer recruitment process for the sport sector. It is being launched to mark the start of National Volunteer Week, which runs April 14-20, 2024.

The sport volunteer hub site features three main components:

  • Sport Organization Hub: A place where organizations can post volunteer opportunities to diversify their volunteer base and find volunteer management resources.
  • Volunteer Sign-Up Portal: A place where volunteers can sign up to be matched with opportunities that align with their skills, interests and time.
  • In the Community: A space to share announcements and celebrate sport volunteers, as well as community ambassadors.

“In a world where time is valuable but connections matter more than ever, this platform is here to make volunteering in sport easy and impactful,” says Susan Eymann, executive director of the LSC.

Blaine Hyggen, the mayor of Lethbridge, applauded the initiative.

“Our local sport events and youth programs would not happen without the tremendous support of the volunteers in our community. This new platform will provide enhanced communication and opportunities for these great community ambassadors,” Hyggen says.

The new sport volunteer hub is available here.
