LETHBRIDGE, AB – A young learner in Lethbridge has won a provincial award.

Sturgis Big Bull, a grade one student at Galbraith Elementary School, has received an Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) 2024 Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award.

The program recognizes First Nation, Métis and Inuit students who show strength in pursuing their educational journey and inspire those around them while celebrating the ways of their people.

The Lethbridge School Division (LSD) says Big Bull, listed as being from the Piikani Nation, earned his award due to his “infectious enthusiasm for acquiring knowledge, which has inspired both his classmates and educators alike”.

The awards were presented in Edmonton on April 15, with Big Bull being one of 11 winners selected from a pool of 230 nominees. Recipients ranged from kindergarten to grade 12.

“This award is a testament to the remarkable resilience, strength and determination of Indigenous students across Alberta,” says Marilyn Dennis, ASBA president.

“Each recipient has not only excelled academically but has also demonstrated exceptional leadership, courage, and dedication, inspiring us all.”

The award recipients were each presented with a certificate and letter of congratulations, a unique handcrafted Star Blanket, and a one-time $2,500 scholarship sponsored by Keyera.

A full list of the recipients is available at the ASBA website.
