Lethbridge College launches student-run magazine

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The first student-run literary magazine at Lethbridge College is being released this week.

Ursa Minor is home to stories, poetry, photography and art created by students at the school. The magazine comes from a new course called English 2291 – Literary Magazine, and has been in the works for multiple years by Dr. Amy Hodgson-Bright.

Hodgson-Bright was the recipient of a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Explore grant in 2020 to get the project running, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed getting it going.

She said, “I found that any time I asked students to write creatively or include images, or gave them opportunities for photography with an assignment, they were so excited. I really wanted to make sure there was some kind of official publication that could showcase that work outside of our classes.”

The magazine will involve students in every part of the publication. They will be responsible for sifting through content, writing and editing the pieces, and distributing the magazines around campus.

Theresa Ogaosun is a student in the English 2291 – Literary Magazine class, and had a hand in designing, editing and publishing. She said despite the challenge, it was rewarding.

Ogaosun elaborated further, “I learned so much about starting a magazine, which is something I have always wanted to do. I can say I am now equipped to launch my own magazine thanks to the experiences I got from this class, and from Amy.”

The name of the new magazine references the school’s mascot, the Kodiak Bear. The Ursa Minor constellation is often referred to as ‘Little Bear’ and ‘Little Dipper’

The first issue of Ursa Minor will be available in hard copy in the afternoon of Thursday, April 18, 2024.
