LETHBRIDGE, AB – A local bookstore has announced the winners of its first awards program.

Analog Books Inc.’s Analog Prize recognizes short story fiction work written by students at the secondary school level in southern Alberta.

The first-place prize of $500 is sponsored by University of Lethbridge chancellor Terry Whitehead.

It was awarded to Catholic Central High School student Stevie Sanders for her composition titled ‘Of Hardened Flesh’.

Meanwhile, three individuals were awarded $100 Analog Books gift certificates. The finalists were:

  • Maxwell Edwards of Chinook High School for ‘The Gallows’
  • Eleah Klassen of Winston Churchill High School for ‘Unfinished Business’
  • Sawyer Jones, homeschooled in Pincher Creek, for ‘The Best of Intentions’

“We were really pleased with the response for the first year with nearly 40 entries from 17 different secondary schools across southern Alberta,” says bookstore co-owner Scott Warris.

“Plus a number of homeschooled students. The work showcased the impressive talents and creativity of our young writers throughout the community. We sincerely hope all the students who entered are inspired to consider writing as a serious career path in the future.”

The Analog Prize was launched for the 2023-24 school year and is open to grade 9-12 students in southern Alberta.

The shop says the prize “intends to inspire and motivate young writers to consider pursuing a future as Canadian literary artists”.

“From bedtime stories to fairytales to essays, short stories have been an integral part of our lives. We look forward to inspiring a new generation of storytellers through the Analog Prize,” states co-owner Penny Warris.
