Lethbridge restarts weekly green cart collection

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is resuming weekly green cart collection.

Residents who have a green cart can expect to see it collected every week beginning on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. The City says the seasonal approach to collection accounts for variations in yard waste generation, and helps deal with the odour from household organics.

Information on when the carts will be collected can be found using the Lethbridge Loop App, which also sends reminders to residents on collection days.

The City also provided the following stats after the first year of green cart collection:

  • Almost six million kgs of organic waste has been diverted from the landfill thanks to curbside green carts.
  • This averages out to approximately 175 kgs of organic waste, per household.
  • The City has given more than 56,000 kgs of free compost away to residents at five giveaway events over the past year.
  • Less than one per cent of residents refused delivery of the green cart. Of those who initially refused, approximately 17 per cent changed their mind and later requested one.

The cart rollout came after City Council created a waste diversion target in 2018 that aims to divert 50 per cent of the waste generated in Lethbridge by 2030.
