The Alberta government is providing $961,000 toward community justice initiatives.

The Alberta Community Justice Grant aims to support ways to make the justice system more accessible, inclusive and responsive to the needs of the province’s diverse communities.

Officials say it will allow for more options to resolve criminal, family and civil justice matters.

For the 2023-24 fiscal year, 39 grant recipients were selected to receive funding, including the Sweetgrass Youth Alliance, based in the Lethbridge area.

“I am proud of this innovative approach to alternative justice for Albertans,” says Minister of Justice and Attorney General Mickey Amery.

“This grant will support organizations to boost community-driven alternatives to the formal court system to better serve their communities.”

The grant offers up to $25,000 in one-time payments to the organizations that provide community-based initiatives aimed at addressing various legal issues, including the development and enhancement of restorative justice programs and increasing access to justice in family law matters.
