HIGH RIVER, AB – The RCMP is asking drivers to be more cautious when driving past emergency and police vehicles.

On April 29, 2024, at 11:30 a.m., an officer with Alberta RCMP Traffic High River was operating an unmarked vehicle. The officer conducted a traffic stop in the southbound lanes on Highway 2, near Highway 540. Officials say they had their emergency lights on as they were behind a pulled-over vehicle. At the time, roads were dry and clear, with officials saying, “visibility was excellent”.

The RCMP says the officer was in his vehicle getting a ticket ready when a passing Ford F350, which “did not move over or slow down”, hit the police vehicle with its passenger side mirror.

The officer checked on the driver of the pulled-over vehicle as well as the driver of the truck that hit the RCMP vehicle, with no injuries being reported.

The RCMP states the Ford F350 driver says they did not see the police vehicle or emergency lights.

Sergeant Darrin Turnbull with Alberta RCMP Traffic says, “This officer is very lucky. This was inches away from being a terrible tragedy. Drivers need to pay attention while they are driving and follow the law when passing any stopped roadside vehicle with lights activated.”

Officials are reminding drivers that when they are in the closest lane to any stopped roadside vehicle with flashing lights on, they must move over to the far lane to give workers extra space.

If a motorist cannot safely move over, they must slow down to at least 60 km/h, or the posted speed limit, whichever is lower.
