NATIONAL INQUIRY

The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) was launched in 2015. It was started to investigate and report on the “systemic causes of all forms of violence against Indigenous women and girls”, including those such as social and economic.

The National Inquiry released its final report in 2019, with 231 Calls for Justice unveiled.

In response, the City and its community partners developed the MMIWG Recommendations and Work Plan. It includes 25 recommendations and a series of initiatives aimed at addressing various barriers facing Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ peoples in the region.

TOOL KIT

As part of the work plan, a tool kit was created to help residents learn more about traditional concepts of family and community life for Niitsitapiiaakiiks (Blackfoot women), Saipáí’tapiiaakiiks (Indigenous, Non-Blackfoot women) and Two-Spirit+ people.

The kit includes actions that people can take to support Indigenous women, girls and gender diverse individuals in the community. The tool kit is available via the City of Lethbridge website.
