Be prepared in case of emergency: City of Lethbridge

May 6, 2024 | 11:17 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It is Emergency Preparedness Week and the City of Lethbridge wants to ensure you know what to do.

Emergency Planning Administrator Jamie Anderson says the theme for this year’s campaign is “Be Prepared, Know Your Risk.”

“That includes knowing what risk factors apply to your household and apply to your evacuation or emergency response. If you have pets, if you have dependants or loved ones that you care for, those are risk factors you would need to take into consideration while you’re planning and making your emergency plans,” says Anderson.

She adds that everyone should have a 72-hour emergency kit that is ready to go at all times. Some of the items it should include are:

  • Non-perishable food
  • Four litres of water per person per day
  • Medical supplies
  • Important records and documents
  • First aid kit
  • Sanitation supplies
  • Emergency cash
  • Pet supplies

Throughout Emergency Preparedness Week, city staff will take part in outreach events, highlighting the importance of emergency preparedness. The public will have the change to win a 72-hour emergency kit.

  • Wednesday, May 8 at LSCO (Fritz Sick), 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • Friday, May 10 at Cavendish Farms Centre Arean, 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Friday, May 10 at Cor Van Raay YMCA, 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 11 at Downtown Lethbridge Public Library, 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

More details on how to build an emergency kit are on the Government of Alberta website.
