Annual Reuse Rendezvous a great way to ‘freecycle’ household items

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The season of spring cleaning will be celebrated this weekend.

The Reuse Rendezvous is back in Lethbridge for another year on Saturday, May 11, 2024. The event was initially launched by the City of Lethbridge in 2011 and is now hosted by Environment Lethbridge (EL). It gives people the chance to give away unwanted gently-used items to their friends and neighbours.

“Reuse Rendezvous is the perfect opportunity to declutter and pass on items that you no longer need,” says EL executive director Kathleen Sheppard.

“It’s also a great opportunity to find new-to-you treasures. For anyone who has been spring cleaning their garage or basement, this is a great way to get rid of some unwanted items.”

The Reuse Rendezvous is held twice annually, once in May and again in September. Officials say it is a great way to keep items out of the landfill. During last year’s May event, residents helped divert an estimated 1,800 boxes of smaller items and nearly 2,000 mid-to-large-sized items like electronics and furniture.

“Freecycling these items not only benefits homeowners, it’s good for the environment,” says Sheppard. “People give away everything from furniture to secondhand books. It’s an easy way to pass things along to someone who wants them.”

All residents need to do to participate is place their items in front of their homes with a “FREE” label before 9 a.m. on May 11. Throughout the day, the community is invited to cruise the streets and help themselves to items marked as “FREE”.

After 5 p.m., any remaining items should be reclaimed by their original owners.

Officials remind everyone to only take items clearly marked as “FREE” to ensure that items that are not part of the event are not taken. Residents can also register their location on an online map from EL.
