LETHBRIDGE, AB – A scholarship created for registered nurses is available at the University of Lethbridge (U of L).

The Dr. Shannon Spenceley Legacy of Nursing Scholarship is available for registered nurses or nurse practitioners in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) who are pursuing a graduate degree at the U of L.

The scholarship was created by local nurses, and is administered by the Alberta Registered Nurses Educational Trust (ARNET).

Fundraising began in 2016 when the Lethbridge Legacy of Nursing Committee was formed. Funding for the scholarship was raised through an annual gala for multiple years, and their fundraising goal was reached in 2022.

The scholarship is named after the former dean of the ULethbridge Faculty of Health Sciences.

Spenceley said, “We discussed the future of the profession and how that future is supported by enabling registered nurses to advance their education. That was how we came up with the notion of a scholarship specifically for registered nurses who want to pursue graduate studies at ULethbridge.”

Since its creation, the scholarship has been awarded to seven recipients.
