Potato company celebrates opening of new facility in Nisku, Alberta

May 8, 2024 | 10:11 AM

NISKU, AB – The Little Potato Company is celebrating the opening of its new sustainable potato packaging facility in Alberta.

The 240,000-square foot facility is located in Nisku, with officials saying the location was selected due to its proximity to strong agricultural regions, dedicated family growers, efficient transportation networks and a skilled workforce.

The site features technology that the company says revolutionizes the way little potatoes are washed, sorted and packaged with eco-friendly processes that help to reduce carbon footprint and waste. The facility also includes a water recycling system that will allow staff to recycle water used in washing little potatoes. Officials say the system will help reduce water usage, lower operational expenses and boost the value and safety of products.

The facility will allow The Little Potato Company to process roughly 125-million pounds of little potatoes every year. Officials add roughly 70 per cent of the site’s capacity will be used for export sales, primarily to the United States.

“What started as a humble dream has blossomed into a global endeavor dedicated to sustainably nourishing and feeding the world better, one little potato at a time,” says Angela Santiago, CEO and co-founder of The Little Potato Company.

“Our innovative facility is built with future generations in mind. We are ensuring that we lead in eco-friendly production to meet growing demand for families wanting to serve delicious and nutritious whole food quickly.”

The site’s construction was made possible thanks to support from the Government of Alberta Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit program.
