LETHBRIDGE, AB – Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines because YQL Aviation Day is coming up.

The special event is on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at the Lethbridge Airport.

Anthony Kish is an airport electrician with the City of Lethbridge. He, along with many at the City, are responsible for bringing the event back to the region.

“To have the support of the City behind this is great. We have a very talented team working on it because everyone has bought in. I really hope people come away from this event inspired, educated and encouraged. I hope they go away excited about a potential aviation career,” Kish says.

The theme for the inaugural initiative is ‘Women in Aviation’, which was inspired by two of Kish’s daughters, who hope to work in the industry.

“When I see women in roles that have been typically dominated by men, nobody sees the battles they go through,” he says.

“Nobody hears the things said to them or sees the people standing between the women and their goals. I was blown away.”

The event includes speakers such as Lethbridge’s Rosella Bjornson, who became famous in 1973 for being the first female airline jet pilot in the country, and the first officer on a twin-jet engine in North America.

Inducted to the Alberta Order of Excellence in 2018, Bjornson was instrumental in challenging airlines for not hiring female pilots and paved the way for women to enter the world of aviation.

YQL Aviation Day will also feature a display cockpit of an F-18, as well as a STARS helicopter.

More details are available at the event website.
