Lethbridge Farmers’ Market to donate leftover food

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Local food banks are once again set to receive regular donations from the Lethbridge Farmers’ Market.

Lethbridge & District Exhibition has announced that, for the second year in a row, vendors at the Lethbridge Farmers’ Market will be able to donate leftover produce and other food items to the Interfaith Food Bank and Lethbridge Food Bank.

The initiative resulted in 6,317 pounds of food being donated last year.

According to the Exhibition, that is equivalent to more than $22,000 in donations and over 6,300 meals to those in need.

Director of Community Engagement Paul Kingsmith says the Lethbridge Farmers’ Market vendor community is a remarkable group who are always willing to give back.

“Our Farmers’ Market vendors have been contributing to local food banks for years, but our partnership with Drive Away Hunger has really helped to solidify the program and ensure the maximum amount of food is making it to our local food banks,” says Kingsmith. “This is a tremendous partnership for everyone involved.”

Farm Credit Canada (FCC) runs the Drive Away Hunger program, a national effort to feed as many Canadians as possible. The campaign provided 143 million meals to people across Canada in 2023.

FCC Manager of Community Investment Carla Warnyca says more Canadians are turning to food banks now than ever, highlighting the importance of food donation programs.

“It’s through the dedication and commitment of Drive Away Hunger partners like the Lethbridge Farmers’ Market and its vendors that we can make a difference. Canada’s agriculture and food industry is working together to meet the growing need with a growing response, reducing food waste and feeding more people,” says Warnyca.

The 2024 season of the Lethbridge Farmers’ Market kicks off this Saturday, June 8 in the UFA Hall of the Agri-food Hub & Trade Centre. It runs from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each Saturday until October 12 and admission is free.
