Bike lane construction set to wrap up in downtown Lethbridge

Jun 9, 2024 | 6:10 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Construction on bike lanes in downtown Lethbridge is set to conclude.

Work is happening on 7 Street South from 4 Avenue to 7 Avenue and once completed, will fully connect the downtown cycling lanes to the 7 Avenue bike boulevard and the city-wide cycling network. The final steps will take place from June 10 to 14, 2024.

Full road closures are not expected, but there will be some impacts on traffic.

The City of Lethbridge says planned work includes:

  • Pavement markings: Will be placed on 7 Street South, from 4 Avenue to 7 Avenue and along 4 Avenue from 6 Street to Stafford Drive, as well as a small area on 6 Street near 4 Avenue. Parking restrictions will be in effect June 10-11 in localized areas. Marking work will continue through the rest of the week with only minor short duration traffic disruptions and lane closures.
  • Concrete block placement: Concrete cycling lane blocks will be placed along the new cycling lanes on 7 Street, between 4 Avenue and 6 Avenue. Blocks will be strategically placed with gaps for pedestrian access where needed. This will require closure of small, localized sections of parking areas to allow for placement of the blocks.
  • Signage: Roadway and cycling lane signage will be installed along 4 Avenue and along 7 Street, where it couldn’t be completed last fall. This work will be completed with only minor disruptions to traffic and should not require any large parking area closures.
  • Other miscellaneous work: Remedial concrete and asphalt patching work will be taking place next week directly adjacent to the CIBC on 7 Street. Only a small parking area directly in front of the accessible parking stall ramp will be impacted during the work.
