LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) has charged a man following an alleged assault on Sunday, June 9, 2024.

Just before noon, police responded to a report of an injured man in front of a business along the 1100 block of Mayor Magrath Drive South. When they arrived on scene they found the victim with life-threatening injuries, and transported him to Chinook Regional Hospital. He was then airlifted to Calgary, where he remains in stable condition.

An investigation by LPS determined the victim was involved in an altercation with another man in the alley behind the business, leading to him being stabbed multiple times.

Witnesses provided a description of the suspect and he was located within minutes of the incident along the 2800 block of Parkside Drive South. Police say he refused to comply and resisted arrest, and officers discharged two sock rounds and apprehended him. Officers seized a knife in a search incidental to the arrest.

Police said the two were known to each other, and the assault was not a random incident.

Christopher David Smith, 34, is charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. Smith was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on June 12.
