LETHBRIDGE, AB – A new person is in charge of two of Lethbridge’s cultural and historical centres.

Dr. Sarah Newstead has been named the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director for both the Galt Museum & Archives and Fort Whoop-Up.

She says it is an exciting opportunity to join the organizations.

“I am absolutely thrilled to be joining the Galt Museum & Archives team,” states Newstead. “I have long admired the institution and the international calibre work it does and am excited to help guide the team on some very bright plans for the future!”

Chair of the Galt Board of Directors Jesse Sadlowski says he is confident in Newstead’s leadership, given her impressive resume.

“Sarah brings a wealth of experience and expertise, having earned her Ph.D. in Archaeology from the University of Leicester. Her leadership as the Executive Director at the Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site in Drumheller since 2017 speaks volumes about her capabilities,” says Sadlowski.

He adds, “Sarah is not only a leader but also a practitioner of continuous learning, embodying a growth mindset that inspires those around her. She actively supports others and embraces new challenges with enthusiasm.”

Newstead will succeed Darrin Martens, who announced his departure from the Galt in March 2024 to embark on an early retirement. The City of Lethbridge’s G.M. of Recreation and Culture Robin Harper oversaw the facilities on an interim basis.
