The Historical Society of Alberta has given funds to two projects in Southern Alberta.

In 2023, the Historical Society of Alberta (HSA) developed a grants program aimed at advancing the understanding of, and ability to share, the history of Alberta.

The second run of recipients took place early in 2024, and eleven projects received cumulatively over $55,000.

In Southern Alberta, $4,500 was awarded to the Barons Historical Society. That money will towards supporting its plaques program which will help to educate locals and visitors on the history of Barons.

In addition, HSA gave $6,000 to another southern Alberta project called Unveiling Black Heritage: Documenting and Celebrating Black History in Southern Alberta. The project is run by Jacqueline Eshun, and is aimed at documenting and researching Black heritage in southern Alberta.

Grant recipients are expected to share their projects with the public and Historical Society of Alberta members through programs and articles.

Other projects from across Alberta awarded grants this year are:

  • Clare Mullen – The Edmonton Storyteller, Tony Cashman
  • Pioneer Acres Plowmen & Threshermen’s Club of Alberta – The Untold Stories
  • Millarville Historical Society – Digitization of historical records and photos
  • Deb Lee — Calgary General Hospital Commemoration Project
  • Frank Finley – Lost Calgary, An Architectural History
  • Kevin Allen — Fare Exchange Revisited, legacy of Dorothy Allen-Gray
  • Jewish Historical Society of Alberta – Jewish Family Histories Project
  • Bowstrings Heritage Foundation — Highlighting Hidden Stories: Mapping Banff’s Indigenous Stories
  • Mark Collings — One Billion Barrels, documentary on Drayton Valley, Pembina Oil
