LETHBRIDGE COUNTY, AB – A Lethbridge County Councillor has resigned from his position.

On June 20, 2024, the county announced that Division 5 Councillor Eric Van Essen has resigned his position on Council following the June 20 meeting.

Van Essen is moving out of the Division and will therefore no longer be eligible to serve as Councillor under the Alberta Municipal Government Act.

He was elected in December 2021. Division 5 is the northwest portion of Lethbridge County, and includes Monarch and the area surrounding the Town of Nobleford and Village of Barons.

Van Essen says that serving on council has been an honour,

“It has been an honour to serve the citizens of Lethbridge County these past few years. It has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and I am thankful for the opportunity to have met and worked with so many terrific people in my time on Council.”

His departure now leaves an open seat on Council, and the county may hold a by-election to fill the seat. A report will be brought forward at the July 4 Council meeting for a decision.
