Whoop-Up Drive rehabilitation to start July 2, last two months

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Summer is known as “construction season” in Canada, and that is surely the case for Whoop-Up Drive.

The City of Lethbridge says a bridge rehabilitation project will begin on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 on the westbound portion of the Whoop-Up Drive bridge.

Road Infrastructure Manager Richard Brummund says this work is important to protect the integrity of the bridge in the long term.

Approximately 90 per cent of the project will involve concrete deck surface repairs.

“On the surface, there’ll be repairs required. They kind of hammer out the concrete, and then they pour new concrete to kind of remove all the voids and stuff underneath to prolong the life of the bridge,” says Brummund.

Crews will start the concrete deck surface repairs on the inside/south lane, moving to the centre and outside lanes later on.

Brummund explains that they will also repair the west approach slab, which involves fixing any pavement patches.

The final portion involves applying sealer to the barriers, deck and roof slabs, which will primarily be done at night.

Richard Brummund explains ongoing bridge inspection and maintenance work in Lethbridge.

He assures that there will be two westbound lanes of traffic open at all times during the rehabilitation project. The speed limit will be lowered to 60 kilometres per hour on Whoop-Up Drive and to 50 km/hr within all working areas.

City officials are asking the public to be aware on the ongoing road work and to plan to leave a few minutes earlier if possible. Drivers are advised to follow all posted signage and traffic controls.

There are currently no plans for construction on Highway 3 through the coulees this summer, so that can serve as an alternate route.

The estimated cost of the project is $1.9 million.
