LETHBRIDGE, AB – A local man has received the highest honour the country can bestow.

The Governor General’s office announced 83 appointments to the Order of Canada on Thursday, June 27, 2024.

Among them are Charles Weaselhead, the CEO of the Blood Tribe Department of Health, a former University of Lethbridge (U of L) Chancellor, and a leader within the Aboriginal Healing Foundation.

In a statement from the Governor General’s office, they say Weaselhead has brought many sectors together across Canada to help advance reconciliation.

He is credited with launching new social, health and education initiatives, as formed a long-standing partnership between the First Nation and the Canadian Red Cross.

The U of L says he was their first Indigenous chancellor, serving for four years starting in February 2019.

“During his tenure, the University launched its ELeV initiative, a unique and innovative partnership between the Blackfoot Confederacy, ULethbridge and the Mastercard Foundation to support and enable Indigenous youth to achieve their goals and become leaders in their communities,’ reads a media release from the U of L.
