LETHBRIDGE, AB – You can now get a better look at how traffic is moving along Whoop-Up Drive.

The City of Lethbridge says four new traffic monitoring cameras have been installed to look at the road, showing both eastbound and westbound, as well as at the Whoop-Up Drive exit ramps at University Drive and Scenic Drive.

The 24/7 cameras take still images in two-minute increments with each photo stored for 20 minutes.

“The cameras are used by Infrastructure Services staff for traffic engineering purposes, such as assessing the effectiveness of traffic systems and efficiency measures like traffic signal timing plans. While these traffic monitoring cameras allow the public to access real-time traffic information through the City’s website, individual vehicles or people are not monitored,” reads a media release from the City of Lethbridge.

It continues, “The cameras are also configured to prevent the collection of any personally identifiable information. Footage is only used for immediate traffic monitoring and management purposes.”

The public is also being reminded that bridge rehabilitation work started this week on the westbound lanes of Whoop-Up Drive. It is expected to continue until the Labour Day long weekend and will involve periodic single-lane closures.

The new Whoop-Up cameras can be viewed on the City of Lethbridge website.
