COALHURST, AB – A group of youths in Coalhurst are giving back to their community.

The Coalhurst DO Crew, operated through Family & Community Support Services (FCSS), has been awarded $1,800 from the 2024 Youth in Action grant program.

The program is funded by the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southern Alberta, and the funds are being used to prepare one-time emergency food hampers for Coalhurst families who have been identified as needing assistance with food security.

Zakk Morrison, Executive Director of FCSS says, “This project is completely youth-led, meaning the youth came up with the idea, helped to write and submit the grant, and package the food hampers. The Coalhurst Youth DO Crew are committed to supporting the Coalhurst community and FCSS is proud to help develop their leadership skills by helping them along the way.”

The families who will receive the food hampers were identified with the help of the Palliser School Division.

Executive Director of the Community Foundation Charleen Davidson says, “It’s wonderful to see youth take the lead and address an issue as problematic as food insecurity. The Do Crew saw a need in their community and demonstrated leadership by going to the Town so they could apply for this grant.”

The hampers will be distributed over the summer months and into the fall.

The Youth in Action Granting Program aims to empower young leaders by supporting youth-ledinitiatives that will benefit the community.

Projects funded through Youth in Action grants must be initiated, led, and organized by residents of Southwestern Alberta up to 25 years of age, in collaboration with a charitable partner.
