LETHBRIDGE, AB – Intense thunderstorms could develop Thursday afternoon, July 18.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for some areas in southern Alberta, including Lethbridge, Coaldale, Taber, Picture Butte, Bow Island and Banff National Park.

They say the conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and large hail.

“Thunderstorms have developed near the US border. Some of these may become severe and some severe thunderstorms may track from Montana across the border into southern Alberta this afternoon,” reads an advisory from Environment Canada.

The weather forecaster is reminding residents of the adage, “When thunder roars, go indoors.”

Most of southern Alberta is also under a heat warning, which was issued on Tuesday.

More information on weather alerts can be found on Environment Canada.
