LETHBRIDGE, AB – UPDATE (8:20 a.m. Wednesday): The Alberta NDP has confirmed that leader Naheed Nenshi will not be running in the Lethbridge-West by-election. He currently does not hold a seat in the legislature.

Original Story:

If you have been thinking about running for the provincial government, one opportunity in Lethbridge is opening up.

A by-election is set to be called in Lethbridge-West sometime before January 1, 2025.

In preparation of that, the Alberta NDP is looking for its candidate for the by-election. Nominations are open to party members who are in good standing.

The NDP secured a seat in the riding in 2023 with the re-election of Shannon Phillips.

Phillips, however, resigned as the MLA at the end of June 2024, part-way through her third term in office.

NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi says Lethbridge deserves a strong voice in the Government of Alberta.

“We have seen phenomenal growth in our party this year, and I am looking forward to members selecting a candidate in a competitive, open, and democratic process,” says Nenshi.

Anybody looking to represent the Alberta NDP can send an email to lethbridge.west@albertandp.ca to be connected with the Constituency Association’s nomination committee.

Alberta NDP members will select their candidate for Lethbridge-West on September 7, 2024.

The by-election will be open to candidates across numerous political parties. The exact date has yet to be determined.
