Lethbridge Shelter and Resource Centre to undergo major expansion

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Provincial funding has been allocated to an expansion project for the Lethbridge Shelter and Resource Centre.

The Alberta government has partnered with the Lethbridge Housing Authority and the Blood Tribe Department of Health to expand the city’s emergency shelter. Once complete, the project will expand the existing shelter, increasing capacity from around 120 spaces to more than 230.

Funding from the province comes in the form of over $4 million to support local partners in order to address challenges of homelessness. In addition, the City of Lethbridge donated the land needed to accomodate the expansion.

Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services Jason Nixon was at the shelter to announce the project. He says that the care put into the shelter and its operations can be a major springboard for other similar projects.

The Blood Tribe Department of Health took over operations of the shelter in April of 2023, and signed a memorandum of understanding with the Alberta government in February 2024 to keep operating it.

Lethbridge mayor Blaine Hyggen said, “The City of Lethbridge has advocated for these steps, and we are pleased to see the rapid progress in addressing the needs in our community.”

The province has also committed $10.2 million toward a permanent supportive housing facility in Lethbridge, which broke ground earlier this year.
