Salt Lake City to host 2034 Winter Olympic Games

The capital of Utah has been announced as the host of the 2034 Winter Olympic Games, as well as the Paralympic Winter Games. Salt Lake City was the only contender in hosting the games, as the United States was the only bid.

This isn’t much of a surprise considering the United States was given exclusive negotiating rights in a fast-track contest for 2034, making them the only possible candidate.

The factors that put Salt Lake City as the only contender involve the costs of putting on such a showcase for three weeks, as well as climate change.

This will be the second time Salt lake City has hosted the Winter olympic Games, their first time being in 2002 – three decades after.

IOC President Thomas Bach said: “Salt Lake City and Utah are long-time friends of the Olympic Movement, and we are confident that they will organize exceptional Olympic and Paralympic Games, just as they did years ago. The legacy of 2002 is tangibly and passionately alive in Utah. The legacy of 2034 starts today.”
