Canada’s first gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics has been won by a Lethbridge athlete.

Christa Deguchi defeated South Korea’s Mimi Huh in the gold medal final by a score of 10-0 to capture Canada’s first ever gold medal in judo. The match went to a sudden death golden score overtime, and Deguchi came out victorious after a penalty to Huh.

The match was a rematch of the 2024 World Championships final in May, which ended with Huh defeating Deguchi.

Deguchi was born in Japan, but moved to Lethbridge in 2017. Since then, she has become the most decorated female judoka in Canadian history.

She has 11 career Grand Slam gold medals, along with four silver and two bronze.
